Setting your first goal

How to set a goal on a number the journal already tracks, and how progress gets measured.

By NKTrades

Goals are a Premium feature. You set them up under Trading → Reports, on the Goals tab.

A goal is set on a number the journal already tracks: nothing here is updated by hand. You pick a metric, a target and a direction (at least or at most), and progress comes automatically from your trades, your prop firm transactions or your routine.

Which metrics you can pick

Metrics come in four groups:

  • Money & prop firm: payouts, net P&L, prop firm spending, challenges passed.

  • Performance: win rate, profit factor, average R, trading days.

  • Risk & behaviour: largest daily loss, trades per day.

  • Routine & discipline: routine streak, average routine score, how often you answer 'yes', rules followed, trades documented.

A goal on a routine field (say, your sleep score) only works once you've set that field up in your routine form. See Setting up your routine (daily start).

Period and scope

You choose a period (day, week, month, quarter, year or a custom period) and optionally a start and end date. Leave the end date empty and the goal keeps running: every closed period starts a new one. You can also tie a goal to specific accounts; tick nothing and every account counts.

How progress is measured

A goal's running period is calculated live, so you always see the current state. Once a period closes, its result is fixed as it stood at that moment, with the target and settings that applied then. Adjusting a goal later never changes how earlier periods were judged.

A goal's history starts the moment you create it. Periods before that don't exist retroactively.

The history tab

Every goal has a history tab: one bar per closed period (reached, missed, or nothing to measure), plus a line showing the percentage reached of what could actually be measured. If a period had nothing to measure (say you didn't trade those days), that's not counted as a miss: it shows separately as 'nothing measured'.

Archiving a goal doesn't erase its history: you'll find it under the Archived tab, with everything ever measured.
