Re-importing and duplicate trades

Why importing twice does no harm, how a trade gets completed instead of overwritten, and what happens to your notes.

By NKTrades

You don't need to track which part of your export you've already uploaded. The import is built so you can safely upload the same file, or an overlapping period, again.

How the journal recognises a duplicate trade

The import recognises a trade that already exists by the combination of account, symbol, and the open and close times. If that combination already exists, the trade is skipped instead of added a second time. After the import you'll see how many trades were skipped.

Completing instead of overwriting

Sometimes a position is already partly in your journal, but missing something. If you first uploaded the TopStepX trade export and later the order export for the same period, the existing trades are completed with the individual fills, the stop-loss and the take-profits, instead of duplicated or replaced.

Completing never touches anything you already filled in: notes, tags and manually set stops and take-profits stay exactly as they were.

After an import you'll see a count of how many positions were completed, alongside how many are new and how many were skipped.

What survives a revert

If you revert an import from the import log, only the trades that file added are removed, along with their notes and tags. Positions the import only completed stay: they were already there before the import. This can't be undone.

So when is it safe to import again?

  • You're not sure you've already uploaded everything for a period.

  • You exported the trade export first and want to add the fills, stop and take-profits.

  • A position was still open at a previous import and has since been closed: export the new period and upload that.

In every case: existing trades never lose what they already had, and no duplicate lines are created.
